Estimation of biomass potential from crop residues in Madhya Pradesh

In 2014, a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) evaluated the potential, in terms of both availability and power production, for biomass in Madhya Pradesh without counting the increase in production in the coming years. The major crops of the state are Wheat, Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Gram and Moong. The residue ratio of each of these crops is considered for estimating the biomass potential from crop residues. The data for crop residues was collected from the Department of Agriculture (DOA), Madhya Pradesh. One of the limitations of the study is that the competing use of biomass is not considered while estimating the biomass potential.


The calorific value for each biomass residue is taken from various public sources to estimate the energy available from crop residues. Further for assessing the potential, Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) is assumed to be 70% and efficiency of the biomass power plants is assumed to be 23%. Based on this analysis, the potential from agricultural biomass works out as 1,255 MW.

Estimation of biomass potential from Lantana Mexicana in Madhya Pradesh

The forest area in Madhya Pradesh covers about 24.66% of its total geographical area (3,08,245 square kilometres). Lantana Mexicana is the potential biomass resource for energy generation. To generate 1 MW of biomass based electricity, about 7,000 tonnes of Lantana Mexicana, per annum, would be required.

As per the Department of Forest, Government of Madhya Pradesh, there are no technical estimates on annual yield of Lantana Mexicana; however, a yield of 452 tonnes per hectare on dry basis can be used to compute its power plant potential.  Considering, the yield per hectare and total biomass generation from Lantana Mexicana, the total power potential works out as 207 MW.
