Biomass has always been an important energy source in India. About 70% of rural households depend on biomass for their primary energy needs such as for cooking and heating. The country has abundant biomass resource potential from woody and non woody resources, but the challenge is in effectively and efficiently using the available biomass resource.
MNRE, since its inception as nodal ministry in the Government of India for renewable energy, has promoted the development and deployment of renewable energy, including biomass, in the long term interest of the country.
The objective of launching the Biomass Knowledge Portal is to enhance the capacities and confidence of project promoters, financial institutions, regulators, policymakers, State Nodal Agencies and other stakeholders through the collection and dissemination of updated, accurate and effective information related to the biomass sector. It will be a single source where all information/data related to the generation of power - grid interactive, as well as off-grid and captive applications and thermal energy from biomass is available. The Ministry hopes that this Biomass Knowledge Portal will significantly contribute towards developing biomass based power generation in India and help harness renewable biomass potential resource in an effective and optimal way.
The portal has been developed under the project “Removal of Barriers to Biomass Power Generation in India”, which is implemented by the Ministry in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF).
